A disabled man’s son allegedly stole more than $150,000 that rightly belonged to the man, according to recently filed court documents.
Rene Bassett Butler as administrator for William P. Haufe filed a lawsuit June 7 in Madison County Circuit Court against Sun Life Financial and Stuart Dabbs.
In her complaint, Butler alleges Dabbs withdrew $183,943.78 from his father, William P. Haufe’s, annuity without his permission. Sun Life allowed the money to be withdrawn, although it should never have done so, according to the complaint.
Haufe, who is disabled, has not yet been repaid the money taken from him, the suit states.
In addition to Dabbs, Butler names Sun Life as a defendant, saying it negligently failed to require the signature required for the withdrawal to be Medallion guaranteed and failed to follow proper procedures when authorizing the withdrawal of the money.
In addition to the money she claims was stolen, Butler is seeking pre-judgment interest, attorney’s fees and costs.
Butler will be appearing.
